Kent State University is all set to build a new College of Public Health and to hire 25 new faculty members with a dean to oversee its operations. It will cost over $5 million over the next few years to launch this new college, the first one for Kent in over two decades.
Kent State is hoping to build this new facility in order to strengthen the medical establishment in Ohio, since the last public health college was built in 1995 by Ohio State University. The new program at Kent State will enrol about 23,000 students and two-thirds of them will be in graduate, either master’s and doctoral programs. This new facility will better serve the aging population of Ohio now that the Baby Boomers are requiring more medical services and long-term care. Eventually this medical program will reach all seven of Kent’s campuses.
Speaking of more medical assistance, the most popular and necessary employment opportunities are found in the health sector. Nurses, doctors, specialists and researchers are going to be in big demand as the country’s population continues to age and put a strain on our long term health facilities. Furthermore, lab technicians, x-ray and CAT scan technicians will be in even greater demand for clinics and hospitals. Lab workers, personal nurses and personal service workers will be difficult to hire if we don’t make these jobs worthwhile.
Kent State is putting its best foot forward in building this facility and hiring more staff and faculty. Every medical university should be doing the same for their state and their country. It adds more to the state’s tax base and offers employment for hundreds more in the tertiary sector as these people will have to live, eat and buy goods somewhere.
It is a win-win situation for all when new medical facilities are built for the good of the country
