  • When the economy is floundering, your parents are tightening their belts and costs are soaring, here are a few tips to put you in good stead for surviving the upcoming school year or the imminent summer. Everyone is doing it so don't feel bad because everyone is in the same boat. No one is living on easy street.

    1. Get a part-time job, baby sitting, working in a store or office for minimum wage and no benefits
    2. Do not eat in restaurants or take outs- eat in the cafeteria or the common kitchen
    3. Do your own cooking and share with three to four others, share the food and costs
    4. Take your old clothing especially jeans to the second hand stores and shop there as well
    5. Look for vintage clothing in the second hand stores such as Goodwill and make a fashion statement.
    6. Make your wardrobe stretch by having 3 pair of jeans, three blouses or shirts, 4 sweaters and one pair of good slacks.
    7. If you need anything shop at dollar stores for bargains.
    8. Email or message home instead of long distance and don't rack up the phone bills
    9. Do laundry once a week and find someone to share with to do a white load and a dark load
    10.  Once a week have friends into the common area and share stories or rent a video.
    11.  Make popcorn in a microwave instead of more expensive treats at the store
    12.  Use the gym to work out and the pool for exercise if they are provided
    13.  Go for walks in big groups, never alone
    14.  Do volunteer work at the local food bank or soup kitchen
    15.  Be thankful for what you have
