  • It is both stressful as well as exciting preparing to join a graduate school. Juggling between your family, jobs and a host of other responsibilities in life as well as continuing your education can be a great challenge.
    Many a time, people tend to give up their efforts overwhelmed by the situation. Following a few important tips can help keep up the motivation and aid in a smooth transition to graduation.

    It is important to keep your point average in your under graduation high. Most of the universities you apply to for graduate programs require a minimum GPA or grade point average. This usually ranges from 2.5 to 3.0.

    Before deciding on a graduate program, take time to choose from different programs on offer. Analyze the pros and cons of each area of study. As you choose a program, take a few aspects into consideration. Research and find out the extent to which the course you take will help you with your career. Also ensure that you have all the requirements and eligibility for the course.

    Find out the duration of the course and your level of interest in the subject. You will definitely fare better and be motivated enough to complete the course if you are deeply interested in what you are studying. It is also a good idea finding out if the course is offered only on campus or even online. You can choose the option that suits your specific needs.
     
    Ensure you fill in the application with care. Most of the graduate schools have to be applied for through applications. Apart from filled in application form, certain colleges also require other documentations such as test scores and official transcripts. Certain universities may also require you to take assessments before you are selected for the course.

    Assessments include examinations such as GMAT or GRE. Keep a file of whatever official transcripts you have from your undergraduate school. Apply for them well in advance as certain schools may take quite some time processing request for transcript.

    If you are looking for financial aid, be sure to a check with the college you are applying for and ask for an FAFSA form. Before filling the form, which has to be done once a year during your loan tenure, keep a copy of your tax information on hand. Also ensure you ask about any grants, work-study jobs or scholarships you are eligible for.

    Make time between your family and work to study on a daily basis. Graduate school study is not very easy. You may have to complete a lot of projects, assignments and study for exams. Avoid keeping studies till the night before exams and review notes on an everyday basis. This will ensure a smooth transition to your graduate school. You will be surprised at how easily you are able to adapt to the challenging situation with a little effort.

    Studying in a graduate school is one of the most rewarding and challenging experiences. Determination and focus will ensure you come out in flying colours.
