  • Education in America has always been a touch expensive. A recent survey states that students have to shell out an average of $655 on materials associated with the course they are pursuing, an amount that is nothing but huge.

However, the good news is that the average material cost has come down slightly in the past couple of years. Bookboon, which is one of the websites that is known to publish academic books free of cost has recently carried out a survey that reveals as much as 99.6% college students do not consider buying textbooks as a good option due to the ever expensive prices.

This is one of the main reasons why students around the country are looking for different ways through which they can buy textbooks at a relatively lesser price. This effort put in by the students clearly reflects on the survey results.

At least sixty percent of the students buy text books that are already used by their fellow mates. On the other hand, only 25% students indulge in buying brand new books. Also, a number of students prefer using e-books instead of conventional text books. They have realized that this is one of the best ways of cost cutting.

The survey states that about 60% of the students claim that they like using digital source of knowledge because it is a lot easier to access. On the other hand, 16% of the students claimed that they do so because it is affordable.

However, what is extremely alarming to notice is that many students from the country are not even buying course material. They are not opting for digital books as well. According to the survey, 76% of students fall in this category. This is no less than a warning for an economy.

A survey carried out in the year 2011 showed similar results. It was carried out by US Public Interest Research Group. According to the survey, as many as seven out of every ten students from the country did not buy text books.

The survey also showed that one of the prime reasons why many students didn’t do well in the exams was because they did not have access to text books. Students are already bearing the brunt of paying extremely high tuition fees. To spend another bomb on books is something that many of them are surely not going to afford, the survey stated.

A student from the Southern California University claimed that he was not sure whether he would be able to afford buying he books till the time the term got started. He also revealed that this led to tremendous amount of stress. Not buying books was one of the main reasons why he could not cope up with the course.

Students all over America are very well aware of the importance of text books. However, the sky high prices have kept them away from buying the books, a high profile daily recently published.
