  • Past few weeks have not been the best as far as higher education is concerned in our country. With the number of student enrollments going down along with the budget granted to colleges and universities, education system seems to be taking lot of dents day in day out.

Florida State Board of Education has put forward a proposal to obtain a grant of $643 million as education budget for 2013. The proposal was put forth recently. Apart from the budget proposal, the education board also came up with an impressive five year plan. According to the plan, there will be increased focus on considerably narrowing gap between the white students and minority students.

Out of the $15.6 billion budget grant proposed by the board, as much as $9.88 would be spent as basic funding for kindergartens in the state of Florida. This would mean that the funding would instantly increase by as much as 3.37 percent.

This certainly would be a considerable increase. As far as state and community colleges are concerned, there will be a whooping increase of about 9.43 percent. In terms of the amount of funding, there will be increase of about $100.5.

In the year 2011, the lawmakers had approved an increase of $1 billion as funding granted for public schools. However, this amount did not turn out to be enough. The board stated that as much as 15 percent of the entire increase in budget would be required just to keep pace with the growing number of enrollments. With more students enrolling, it is important to enhance the quality of education as well.

The State board is going to face problems if they fail to offer good quality education facilities to its students. Ultimately, Florida too would also find itself facing the same problems as some of the other States in America have been witnessing. For the purpose of improving the K-12 technology, the board has kept a budget of $442 million.

Florida Board of Education is keen on encouraging black and Hispanic students to have same goals as the white students. The plan put up by the board indicates that they are looking at an increase as far as the reading scores and grades of black students are concerned. Currently, these scores read a mere 38.

According the plan proposed by the board, the figure should touch 74 by the year 2017. As far as Hispanic students are concerned, the board is looking to increase the current figure of 53 to reach somewhere about 81 by the end of same year.

Apart from black and Hispanic students, the plan also has strategies drafted for white students. These students are currently scoring 69 on an average. However, the board wants to stretch this figure to 88 and 86 in reading and math respectively.

Looking at the overall condition of higher education at the moment, the plan certainly seems like one that can bring life to the otherwise dull system.
