  • Superstorm Sandy has certainly caused a lot of damage across our country. Unfortunately, it seems like the situation is going to take a lot of time to set right looking at the devastation caused by the storm.

Colleges across the country have been affected by the storm. The storm is buying more time for the seniors from colleges to get done with their applications. Many colleges have decided to extend the deadline. It is speculated that the deadline will get extended by almost a week.

Usually, the deadline is in the month of January for most cases. The deadline for the current year was originally the 1st of November. However, looking at the destruction the storm has already caused, colleges have taken a rather sensible decision of not standing by the original deadline and extending it further.

The storm has caused a lot of damage and millions are left without power and electricity, especially on the East Coast. Looking at the situation, the National Association for College Admission Counseling finally came to a decision that the original deadline does not seem to be enough in a situation like this.

It would be very unfair on the students who fail to submit the application within the deadline as most of them would miss it due to the storm. Most of the colleges who agreed to the decision conveyed the change of deadline to the students via blogs. Many of them also did so through social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook.

Duke University and University of Virginia decided to push the deadline to next Sunday. The original deadline was on a Thursday. Boston, Stanford, Yale, Cornell, Columbia and Dartmouth Universities have now chosen Monday as the deadline while the University of Pennsylvania has decided to give another extra day for students and has chosen Tuesday as their deadline.

Tufts and Brown universities announced that they shall be taking the applications until Wednesday. On the other hand, Maryland University also extended the deadline but did not specify any particular date. It has requested the students to check on the official website for the changed deadline.

Administrators at the Columbia University stated that they are hoping the extension of deadline will help students in a long way to get over the anxiety and stress that they are currently going through. Universities apart from the ones mentioned above did not come up with any official change as far as deadline was concerned. However, they did state that the approach of the administrators will be flexible in case of applicants seriously affected by the storm.

Few universities from Virginia have also requested the affected students to get in touch with the authorities over phone or email and submit a request to offer them extra time for application submission. Initiative taken by all the universities is certainly going to help our students. We can only hope our country recovers quickly from this scenario and gets back to normal life as early as possible.
