  • Higher education across the country is not just about textbook knowledge and information. A student gets to know the basics of life while being in college. However, it seems that not all of the college students across our nation are going the right way, well atleast as far as muscle gaining is concerned.

A new report states that as many as 5 percent of the college students make use of steroids in order to gain weight and sculpt their bodies. Although 5 percent may sound less, when we compare it with the total numbers of students across the country, the figure eventually looks alarming, if nothing else.

Apart from using steroids, one out of three students has confessed that they make use of protein powder and similar other supplements in order to gain mass, making the overall issue even more alarming. The report claims that media is one of the biggest driving forces as far as the teens are concerned. More often than not, these steroids and supplements are glorified by the media to a great extent, leaving no opting for the youngsters but to indulge in their usage.

In this day age, where physical appearance matters more than probably any other aspect, every teenager wants to flaunt a great body and hence does not take much of an effort before he/she is lured into using products that might cause a lot of harm to the body in the coming years.

For colleges and universities, it is important to stop promotion of any kind of steroids or unwanted substances in their gymnasiums. Most of the colleges across our country have private gymnasiums for their students, if not all.

Even though the college authorities cannot really keep a check on what the students are doing outside the campus, they can certainly make sure that none of the harmful substances are made available in their own gymnasium. People, especially trainers who promote such kind of substances should be subject to some strict action.

Most of the students who make use of such substances are professional athletes who compete on behalf of their respective institutions. Unfortunately, the term ‘healthy competition’ seems to have been replaced by the use of steroids. Today, every student wants to earn a name in the college and there is no better way than being one of the best in sports.

Another thing that the colleges across the country can do in order to stop students from using such harmful products is making them aware about their side effects. There is no harm in having lectures and classes that specifically look into these aspects.

Many of our students are not aware of the ill effects these products can have on their body and hence they continue to use them regularly. By conducting awareness drives inside the college, a large number of students will come to terms with reality. According to the report, male as well as female students are using steroids for various purposes.
