  • What happened at the Sandy Hook Elementary School is very much fresh in the minds of citizens across our country. This is not the first time when an individual has stormed into an educational institute and opened fire on innocent people. Unfortunately, such incidences are on a rapid rise. This leaves us with one question dominating in our minds. Are colleges and universities safe across America?

If one looks at the current scenario, they are probably no longer safe. Parents are scared to send their children to school and colleges. It is high time that some action is taken in order to prevent such incidences. So what can the governing body exactly do in a situation like this? What is the best way to come out of this scenario and make students and teachers feel safe attending schools and colleges?

To begin with, security needs to be beefed up in and around educational institutes, hospitals and all other places where mass crowd gathers at the same time. These are usually the kind of places lunatics target to get the frustration out of their minds.

Having said this, it is not an easy task to keep a watch on schools and colleges, especially if the gunman is amongst the students. Each and every student has to be checked at the gate to confirm that he/she is not carrying and weapon or any other kind of object which can create physical harm to anybody.

Students who do not have the greatest of psychological records and history should be kept an eye on. Ideally, such students should not be allowed to get enrolled in colleges, especially if they do not have the best of controls over the mind and also have a tendency to show unwanted aggression which could lead to criminal activities.

According to a number of psychological experts, what America needs to do right away is restrict easy access to weapons. Over the last one year, more than 10 shootout incidences have been recorded across the country. Most of the cases could have been avoided had the killers would not have got access to weapons.

Some of the killers have stormed into educational institutes carrying machine guns and automatic weapons. This is extremely alarming as these weapons should ideally be very hard to get. However, the ease at which citizens seem to have access to such dangerous weapons is an issue that needs t be addressed immediately.

President Obama made it clear to the people that America will no longer tolerate such incidences. He was also responsible enough to say that our country has not done enough to keep its children safe from any kind of harm and stressed on the point that a lot more needs to be done.

Well, with such kind of honest confessions coming from the man who was re-elected just a couple of weeks ago, one can assume that improvements are just around the corner. We only hope measures are in place before the next kid round the block decides to take law into his hands.
