  • How to Build Your Resume While in College

  • One of the most frustrating things about the job force these days is that, for most high paying, fulfilling careers, you will need a college education AND experience. Of course, while you are in college, it’s practically impossible to gain the experience you will require as you need the education to gain a position. Furthermore, even if you do gain the experience, you will need the education to ever move up. It’s a catch 22 situation and, quite frankly, it really stinks.

So how can you work towards building your resume while in college so that, when it comes time to graduate, you are prepared for the work force?

There are three ways to do this.

    1. Look into internships. Unfortunately, you have to start at the bottom to get to the top; however, internships will give you the extra edge over your competitors. Internships also allow you to taste test your intended job force so you can be sure that you like what you see.

    2. Volunteer. If you have a few hours to spare a week, consider volunteering for a local charity or a good cause. If you can find a volunteering position in your intended career, then even better. For example, if you want to be a vet, apply for a volunteer position with your local SPCA. If you want to be a teacher, volunteer at the child care center.

    3. Get active at your college. Universities and colleges have hundreds of school run programs and events directly related to different careers. If you are a political science major, consider joining your University’s Government club. If you want to be a writer, join your University’s newspaper organization. Check your University’s website to see a list of the different clubs and organizations.

Internships, volunteer and college club positions look great on a resume. Not only do they give you experience, but it shows that you are dedicated and committed to the industry.
