  • Description:
  • Recognized nationally and internationally as one of the leading graduate schools and colleges of human resources and labor relations, we offer a full range of graduate-level degrees. These include a master's degree, a dual master's and JD degree, and a Ph.D.

    Our Master of Human Resources and Labor Relations (MHRLR) is offered in three locations. Students enrolled in our program at our East Lansing campus can take classes on a full-time or part-time basis. Students with limited work experience have excellent opportunities for paid internships during the summer months with an extensive number of companies and organizations that regularly recruit our graduates. It is a degree highly regarded in the market place.

    Working professionals in the greater Detroit-metropolitan area seeking to obtain a master's degree while working full-time can enroll in classes offered in Troy, Michigan at MSU's Management Education Center (Troy Campus). Designed to accommodate the busy schedules of working students, blended in-class and on-line evening coursework can be taken on a part-time, year-round basis.

    Expanding the global reach of our academic programs, our MHRLR degree is now available in Dubai (Dubai Campus). Tailored to meet the needs and interests of a fully international student body, our Dubai program is designed to accommodate the professional development objectives of domestic and foreign students, as well as expatriates on assignment in Dubai.

    In addition to our MHRLR degree, students can enroll in MSU's Dual MHRLR/JD Degree. Coordinated by SLIR and the College of Law, this four-year curriculum is designed for students seeking careers in law with a focus on human resource and labor relations legal issues.

    For students wanting academic research and teaching careers, we offer an interdisciplinary Ph.D. degree (Doctoral Program). In addition to taking courses provided by our own faculty, students take courses in other departments and colleges. With a primary focus on conducting original and cutting-edge research, students work closely as research assistants to our faculty, who also chair their dissertation committees.

  • Admission Information:
  • Admission into the MHRLR program is determined by a careful case-by-case review of each applicant's credentials. Particular emphasis is given to one's undergraduate junior-senior GPAs, GRE or GMAT scores, letters of recommendation, and a statement of purpose and intent. A junior-senior GPA better than 3.0 is preferred for admission. However, an applicant with a somewhat lower GPA may be admitted if other components of his/her application are strong.

    An applicant's undergraduate major is not a factor in admissions decisions. However, students will need to have completed (or will need to complete) the following undergraduate level courses to be adequately prepared for graduate study:

    An undergraduate micro-economics course with a 3.0 grade or better
    An undergraduate behavioral science course with a 3.0 grade or better
    An undergraduate statistics course with a 2.0 grade or better
    Students must complete the undergraduate micro-economics course before enrollment in LIR 809 (Labor Markets) and the undergraduate statistics course before enrollment in LIR 832 (Quantitative Methods for HR and LR).

  • Financial Aids:
  • Graduate assistantships are awarded by the School of Labor and Industrial Relations to:

    - make high-quality students available to School faculty, primarily in non-sponsored research and secondarily in instructional tasks;
    - attract superior students into the Master of Human Resources and Labor Relations (MHRLR) degree program and the Ph.D. in Industrial Relations and Human Resources, so that academic excellence may be more readily maintained in these two graduate programs;
    - enable the School faculty responsible for research grants and contracts to meet their obligations under the terms of the grants or contracts;
    - provide graduate students with opportunities to develop scholarship and professional skills while working under the guidance of faculty.
