  • Description:
  • The Graduate School at Cornell is organized into over 90 disciplinary fields, which are voluntary groupings of faculty members and scientists with similar areas of interest. Fields at Cornell are subdivided into subject areas and concentrations.

About 33 faculty have been drawn together into the field of Soil and Crop Sciences by mutual professional interests in the concentrations of Environmental Information Science, Environmental Management, Field Crop Science, Soil Science, and Agronomy. The field of Soil and Crop Sciences is closely linked with the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences, an administrative unit within the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell. Most members of the field are also faculty members in the department. As recognized fiscal units of the college, the department administers teaching, extension programs, and salaries, as well as all research funds and the graduate student financial support derived from research funds. The field of Soil and Crop Sciences is responsible for determining admissions of new graduate students to the field, maintaining records of graduate student progress, nominating students for awards and fellowships, and setting guidelines for requirements within the field.

  • Admission Information:
  • Prospective students must meet the Graduate School's general admission requirements and must also be acceptable to the Field of Soil and Crop Sciences. An applicant for admission to the Graduate School should hold a baccalaureate degree granted by a faculty or university of recognized standing or have completed a degree or diploma program equivalent to the baccalaureate degree program at Cornell; have adequate preparation for graduate study in the chosen Field; and present evidence of promise in advanced study and research. Students from United States colleges and universities who meet these criteria are usually in the top third of their graduating classes. Foreign students must also meet English competency requirements.

Criteria for Admission to the M.S./Ph.D. Programs
    1. Subject areas studied at the undergraduate level.
    2. Grade point average (G.P.A.).
    3. Graduate Record Examinations (G.R.E.).
    4. English competency.
    5. Letters of recommendation.
    6. Statement of goals.
    7. Faculty supervisor.

Criteria for Admission to the PhD Program

Students who apply for entrance to department Ph.D. programs will be judged essentially upon the same criteria as students who apply for M.S. programs, but special attention will be paid to the prospective Ph.D. student's area of training at the M.S. level. Prospective Ph.D. students who have M.S. degrees in areas other than crop or soil science and who wish to be accepted into the Ph.D. program should contact a faculty member in the Field of Soil and Crop Sciences to discuss programs of interest.

  • Financial Aids:
  • Admission to the Graduate School is an academic decision and does not include the award of financial support. Students may obtain support in several ways. The Department of Crop and Soil Sciences may provide teaching assistantships and graduate research assistantships. Faculty members with external (non department) sources of funding may also have the resources to support a graduate research assistant. A few outstanding students may receive fellowship awards through the Graduate School.

There are three kinds of assistantships:
    teaching assistantships
    research assistantships, and
    graduate research assistantships.
