  • Description:
  • Linguistics (M.A., Ph.D.)
Welcome to the homepage of the Linguistics section of The Department of Linguistics and Germanic, Slavic, Asian, and African Languages at Michigan State University. Our faculty all have interests in particular languages as well as in the universal and theoretical aspects of linguistics. We offer programs of study leading to the B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees. Follow the links on the left for more information.

    German Studies (M.A., Ph.D.)
Our graduate program offers both the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees. The intimacy of a small program allows faculty to be accessible to students while they study at a large research university. Students are encouraged to pursue inter- and cross-disciplinary programs and initiatives across campus.

    TESOL (M.A.)
Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages
We have a large and well established program with nine core faculty members, who have a wide range of research interests. We strive to provide our graduate students with the practical experience that they need to become professionals in teaching ESL and EFL. At the same time, we encourage a critical exploration of the related research and provide research opportunities for those students wishing to pursue a Ph.D. in second language studies. Our graduates are employed throughout the United States and the world in positions whose duties include teaching (both English and other languages), teacher training, materials development, program administration, and computer-assisted language learning. Please visit our web site for detailed information on admission, course requirements, faculty, undergraduate endorsement program, and dual TESOL/linguistics MA.
