It's essential for you to keep your resume within one page. In order to achieve that, every word in that resume has to and must represent or impress someone. Meaningless phrases like "references available upon request" for example, is just extra and useless words that can be omitted from the one pager. It's a given that if the company is interested in you, they will then ask for references.

You should take a look at your objective section and make sure they are written in condensed to the point. If you have been working for a couple of years, then items such as school clubs and organizations can be eliminated from your resume.

Also, you should customize depending on what type of jobs you are applying to. For some jobs, you might want to put heavy emphasis on a particular set of skills, while other jobs might want you to concentrate on management of staff.
