    The University of North Alabama’s Department of Cinematic Arts and Theatre invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor beginning in Fall 2025 in the area of theatre. This appointment is a nine-month contract with full benefits.

    The University of North Alabama, situated in the historic city of Florence, is an integral part of the Shoals, a region renowned for its vibrant artistic community and rich cultural heritage. This region boasts deep and influential roots in music history, particularly in genres such as rock and roll, southern rock, and the blues. Our faculty position in the arts offers a unique opportunity to engage with and contribute to this thriving creative community, where tradition and innovation intersect to create a dynamic and inspiring environment for both educators and students alike.

    The Department of Cinematic Arts and Theatre is a proud member of the UNA School of the Arts, alongside wonderful colleagues from the Departments of Music, Visual Arts & Design, and Entertainment Industry.

    Our department is home to the prestigious George Lindsey UNA Film Festival, Alabama's longest-running film festival, which annually attracts a diverse array of filmmakers from all corners of the globe. UNA is also the current host of the highly regarded Walter Trumbauer High School Theatre Festival, a competitive platform where thousands of high school students showcase their theatrical talents, fostering the next generation of performing artists in the region.

    The successful candidate will be expected to continue to produce creative work while maintaining excellence in teaching; develop and maintain an agenda of research and/or creative activities relevant in the field; perform recruiting activities for the department; attend faculty and other meetings; mentor students in the department; contribute to department curriculum development; manage department equipment and facilities; and foster diversity and inclusion among students.

    Essential Job Duties
    Teach a 12-credit hour course load per semester of courses that may include, but are not limited to, the areas of theatre appreciation, writing for the stage and screen, theatre design & tech, acting, and theatre directing; Mentor students and assist with their academic and creative projects; Collaborate with film and theatre faculty and staff on experiential learning courses; Provide supervision for departmental projects, which may require flexible hours; Continue to produce creative w­­ork relevant to the field; Attend faculty and departmental meetings; Contribute to curriculum development; Manage department equipment and facilities with student equipment room workers; Perform recruiting activities for the department; Assist with the Trumbauer Theatre Festival, the George Lindsey UNA Film Festival, and other special events; Engage in additional duties tailored to the­­ candidate's strengths and departmental needs; Foster belonging among program students; and advise students academically and professionally.

    Minimum Qualifications
    A Terminal degree (MFA or PhD) in theatre or a related field is required; ABD candidates may be considered provided degree is completed by the start date of appointment; demonstrated experience in teaching theatre disciplines is required; and a proven professional track record in theatre is required.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Proficiency in contemporary theatre techniques; Excellent oral and written communication skills; Ability to work with students, faculty, and staff of various backgrounds and differing education levels; Ability to use appropriate current technology for educational instruction; Ability to mentor student designers; and ability to work with Norton Auditorium/George Lindsey Black Box Theatre Senior Technical Director and Technical Director on theatrical productions.
