Protesters gather as U. of I. board meets to OK 9.5 percent tuition hike

As the University of Illinois’ board of trustees met today to consider hiking tuition for incoming students by 9.5 percent, union protesters gathered outside the meeting to protest the increase and the proposed salary to be paid to the university’s new president.

State Sen. Martin Sandoval (12th) called the tuition increase “unconscionable” and “insulting,” noting that it’s coming even as the board hires a new university president at a base salary of $620,000.
