  • Employment and Graduate Study: How to Work in Grad School

    Most full time graduate programs expect students to work on their graduate studies full time. Some discourage students from working even part time and many forbid students who receive funding from the department or institution from working. Ideally graduate students should make their studies a priority and refrain from any kind of employment. However, many students cannot afford to not work. The reality is that even students who have assistantships and receive funding from their programs have a hard time making ends meet. Assistantships might award several hundred dollars per month - not enough for most students to live independently. Outside employment often is not an option for graduate students. What do you do if you have to work?
