I think the most important thing to keep in mind while studying abroad is to know your country's laws. You can't assume what is law in your native country and apply the same law to your study abroad destination. One good way to get familiar is to read the Travel Warning and State Department Consular sheets for information on the legal systems in the countries to which you will be traveling. Also, should you get into trouble with the law, you should get in touch with your embassy and seek help there.
